Rima Bag, a beacon of resilience and determination, grew up in Puintala block, Balangir district, Odisha. In their modest mud house, life was already a daily struggle for her and her six siblings—five sisters and one brother. But when tragedy struck, and her mother passed away unexpectedly, leaving her and the youngest sister just three years old, Rima’s world was turned upside down. With a strength that belied her years, she shouldered the burden of her family’s survival, transforming their dire circumstances into a testament to her unwavering spirit.

Rima’s father, engaged in agricultural labor and earning a meager living, chose not to remarry. Consequently, the household responsibilities fell upon Rima at a tender age. She managed the daily domestic chores: cooking for the entire family, washing and cleaning, fetching water from the well, and tending to the cattle. Additionally, she took on the responsibility of teaching her younger siblings. Remarkably, amidst all this drudgery, Rima did not discontinue her education and successfully completed her higher secondary studies.

“One day, my friend told me about the tailoring classes being held at the nearby skill development center, conducted by Parinaama,” Rima recalled. “At that time, I didn’t even have a cycle to go, and it was quite a distance from my village.” Despite their hardships, her father secured a loan and bought a cycle so she could avail herself of the opportunity. Yet, this was not the end of her challenges. “On my way to the training center, I was harassed and teased by local youth who couldn’t accept that young girls and women could venture out alone. But I didn’t let this demotivate me. I knew this was a critical opportunity that could provide immediate earnings if I excelled. I had to earn and provide for my family.”

Rima’s determination and perseverance propelled her forward. She excelled in tailoring, quickly receiving orders for stitching garments. She seized every opportunity that came her way, paving the path to a better life. Today, Rima earns up to Rs. 1000 per day and can handle her family’s expenses with ease. The family, once living in a dilapidated mud house, has now built a sturdy brick home thanks to her earnings and savings, alleviating the financial burden on her father and brother.

This is true empowerment. Rima’s pride and satisfaction are evident as she shares her story. Through Parinaama’s support, she has become a self-sufficient and independent woman, a role model for others. Rima’s journey is a testament to the power of determination, support, and the right opportunities. With a little guidance and resources, one can overcome difficulties and soar high.
